The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to acquire Kyrie Irving and Markieff Morris from the Brooklyn Nets for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, an unprotected first round pick in 2029, and second round picks in 2027 and 2029.

Irving is currently set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Irving and the Nets were unable to agree to terms on a contract extension.

Irving joined the Nets in free agency in 2019 and had a tumultuous tenure with the franchise. Irving initially requested a departure from the Nets in 2022, but that was rescinded after no deal materialized.

Irving has familiarity with Jason Kidd and Nico Harrison of the Mavericks. The Mavericks have been searching for a second star to pair with Luka Doncic after letting Jalen Brunson walk in free agency.

According to Marc Stein of Substack, the Mavericks consulted Doncic before agreeing to the trade.
