Magic notes: Orlando ended its second three-game losing streak of the season Thursday night in Golden State. The Magic outscored the Warriors 35-22 in the second quarter and hung on in the second half for a 105-100 victory. . . . Tracy McGrady scored 40 points, the third time in four games on this roadtrip that he has scored at least 40 points. His four 40-point games are the most in the NBA this season. McGrady made 19 of 30 shots and added seven rebounds and four assists. . . . Unlike many times when McGrady has had to shoulder too much of the load, he had help Thursday. Mike Miller scored 15 points, while Patrick Ewing (14 points) and Troy Hudson provided a spark off the bench. Ewing got to the free throw nine times and had a key blocked shot late in the game to ice the victory. . . . Grant Hill is eligible to come off the injured list tonight, but did not even make the trip because of lingering pain in his surgically repaired left ankle. Hill sprained his ankle on Nov. 23, irritating some pre-existing bone spurs on the top of the ankle. Surgery to remove the spurs is a possibility if Hill's pain does not subside in the coming week.
Blazers notes: Portland entered Friday's game in Utah having lost three of its past four games. The Blazers have a disappointing 10-10 record , including losses to Golden State, Houston and Charlotte. . . . Portland blew a late lead Tuesday night in Dallas, allowing Steve Nash to score 15 points in the final three minutes. Portland lost despite shooting 50 percent and holding Dallas to 43 percent. . . . Four of Portland's five starters average in double figures and Damon Stoudamire is close at 9.5 points a game. Ruben Patterson, a free agent signed away from Seattle, has been a surprise off the bench by averaging 13.1 points a game. . . . Bonzi Wells could give the Magic trouble with his ability to slash to the hoop. He is shooting 51.4 percent, with most of his buckets coming off post-up moves or drives to the basket. . . . Rasheed Wallace has done a better job controlling his temper this season. He's had just seven technical fouls called against him in 20 games. He's averaging 19.2 points, but for some reason he has become more of a jump shooter. He's at a dismal 25.9 percent from beyond the arc. . . . Derek Anderson has been a mild disappointment after coming to the Blazers via a sign-and-trade deal this past summer. His shooting percentage has plummeted to 40.6 percent this season. . . . Shawn Kemp is playing just 12.2 minutes a night.
Next for the Magic: Sunday, at Seattle SuperSonics, 9 p.m. (Sunshine Network).
