The New Orleans Pelicans wanted to take a wait and see approach on the long-term future of Brandon Ingram when they discussed an extension.

Ingram underwent thoracic outlet decompression surgery in his right arm.

"I couldn't do anything but respect it," Ingram said at the time.

Sources say the Pelicans' front office continues to view Ingram as a critical building block going forward. Ingram and Lonzo Ball were traded to the Pelicans this past offseason.

"We're going to continue to work from that vantage point because they've been very, very clear in their desires to continue their careers here," David Griffin said.

Ingram insists contract issues aren't on his mind as the season returns. Ingram will be a restricted free agent.

"That's more for after the season," Ingram said. "This season, I was so focused on being with my teammates and just playing basketball after being out the way last year went when I couldn't finish the season. This year was about me just going out and showing where I belong and excel in this new space. I think playing in this could help me out."
