Lakers Assign Tarik Black, Ryan Kelly To D-Fenders

The Los Angeles Lakers have assigned Tarik Black and Ryan Kelly to the D-Fenders.

Kelly scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the pair’s first appearance of the season on December 13th. Black finished with a double-double, tallying 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Black and Kelly are expected to be in uniform when the D-Fenders host the Idaho Stampede.

D-Fenders Acquire Jamaal Franklin

The Los Angeles D-Fenders have acquired forward Jamaal Franklin, it was announced today by General Manager Nick Mazzella. In a related move, the team has waived forward D.J. Shumpert.

Franklin returns to the D-Fenders after appearing in 21 games for the team during the 2014-15 season. The 6’5” forward recorded three triple doubles, averaging 19.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Franklin earned a Call-Up to the Denver Nuggets on April 12, 2015, playing in three games, tallying 1.0 points, 1.0 assists, and 0.7 rebounds per game. Franklin was drafted 41st overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2013 NBA Draft, appearing in 21 games, with averages of 1.9 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 0.3 assists in 7.7 minutes.

D-Fenders Acquire Justin Harper

The Los Angeles D-Fenders have acquired forward Justin Harper.

In a related move, the team has waived center Kentrell Gransberry.

Harper, a 6’10” forward from Richmond, spent training camp with the Brooklyn Nets and appeared in six preseason games, with averages of 9.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 19.1 minutes. Harper was drafted in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and was immediately traded to the Orlando Magic for a future 2nd round pick. Harper played in 22 games for the Magic during the 2011-12 season. In November of 2012, Harper signed with the Idaho Stampede of the NBADL and appeared in 48 games, with averages of 11.7 points, and 6.5 rebounds per game. Harper has also played professionally in France, Israel and Italy since graduating from the University of Richmond in 2011.

D-Fenders Hire Casey Owens As Head Coach

The Los Angeles D-Fenders have named Casey Owens as head coach.

Owens replaces Conner Henry, who was called up to the Orlando Magic coaching staff on June 26th, and returns to the D-Fenders after serving as an assistant coach for the team during the 2013-14 season.  

“We are proud to announce Casey Owens as head coach of the D-Fenders,” said Buss. “Casey’s success globally and domestically is critical to our goal of developing players in a winning atmosphere, which will help guide us in our pursuit of a championship.”

Lakers Sign Vander Blue For Remainder Of Season

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Vander Blue for the remainder of the season.

Blue joins the Lakers from the team’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Los Angeles D-Fenders, where he finished second in the D-League in scoring at 23.3 points per game on 47.3% shooting (41.6% from beyond-the-arc), in addition to 5.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game in 49 appearances (47 starts). The 22-year-old was selected as an NBADL All-Star this season, and held the distinction of being the only player to average at least 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists in 2014-15.

Lakers Plan On Signing Jabari Brown To 10-Day Contract

Brown currently plays for the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the D-League.

Brown has averaged 24.4 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in 34.9 minutes for the D-Fenders.
