Shabazz Muhammad will announce where he intends to go to college on April 11 — the first day of the spring signing period which runs through May 16.
“This is a lifetime decision for me. I have to make sure I make the right decision,” Muhammad said. “I’m still being patient with it. The process is going good right now. April 11 is when I will announce it.”
Muhammad, the consensus No. 2 overall prospect, is considering UCLA, Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky and UNLV.
Anthony Bennett has narrowed his list of schools to Florida, Kentucky, Oregon, UNLV and Washington.
"A lot of pressure is now lifted off of me by cutting my list down,” Bennett said. "Now I can deal just with those schools and watch the teams play and how the coaches coach their team. I feel like I took a step a step forward in the process."
Bennett, the top unsigned power forward in the country, is ranked No. 7 overall in the 2012 class.
Nerlens Noel, a 6-foot-10 shot-blocking center out of Everett, Mass., has drawn comparisons to Bill Russell and Alonzo Mourning, among others.
Noel said he most likes to be compared to Russell, who won 11 NBA championships in thirteen seasons with the Celtics.
“I like the comparison to Bill Russell,” Noel explained. “He was a great legend of the game. And he won multiple championships in Boston, and that’s where I’m from. So, that comparison means a lot to me.”
Noel has narrowed his college choices to Kentucky, Syracuse, and Georgetown and will base his decision in part on their perceived ability to prepare him for the NBA.
“I want to play for a coaching staff that I can trust and that I know will be able to develop me and prepare me for the next level,” Noel said.
Shabazz Muhammad is scheduled to make an official visit to UCLA in early April.
“I think Coach [Ben] Howland wanted him to come at the beginning of April, for that weekend in the beginning April [6-8], but I know that’s close to the Jordan Game, so I have to look at those dates,” Muhammad’s father, Ron Holmes confirmed. “I’m not exactly sure but that’s when I’ve got it penciled in for.”
Muhammad, who is seriously considering UCLA, Duke, Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky and UNLV, plans to announce his college decision within a week or two of his visit with the Bruins.
“That’s going to be our last official visit,” Holmes said of the UCLA visit. “Then I think he’s going to decide on the 9th or the 10th, something like that. He’ll do something at his high school [to announce].”
Jabari Parker said he will still consider committing to Illinois despite the firing of coach Bruce Weber.
"I was very disappointed," Parker said. "That was a person who first recruited me growing up. I feel like if the [new] coach there tried to recruit me they wouldn't have a better relationship than [Weber] had. That really plays a key.
"They'll still be in the mix because what we haven't been looking at is making our own state good," he added. "A lot of players they leave to go to these Kentucky's and Duke's, but they don't see the state and representing the area they're from."
Parker, the nation’s No. 1 junior, is mulling offers from Northwestern, Kentucky, Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina and Ohio State.
Shabazz Muhammad is glad Ben Howland will remain at UCLA next season.
UCLA is one of the leaders in the pursuit of Muhammad.
"We're happy for Ben, happy for the program," Muhammad's father Ron Holmes told The Times in a phone interview. "I think he's going to do a good job and that he'll get the program back on track."
Muhammad is expected to sign a letter of intent with his chosen school on April 11.
Nerlens Noel will make an official visit to North Carolina next week.
“North Carolina got a tradition that speaks for itself,” Noel said in a recent interview. “Very well coached by Roy Williams and that’s a great program and especially talking to him he told me some things about playing time right away and that’s a positive.
“I think I was more drawn to UNC, that was one of my premier schools I liked growing up.”
Noel has trimmed his list to Kentucky, Syracuse, North Carolina, Georgetown and UConn.
