When considering in the benefits of a substantial up-front payment from the expansion fees (including factoring in the time value of money) and the threat of bubble in relation to team values, it would behoove the owners to reincarnate the Sonics and a second franchise. Featuring 19 players, including two players who are new additions to the 2014-16 USA Basketball National Team roster, USA Basketball Chairman and National Team Managing Director Jerry Colangelo announced this summer’s USA Basketball Men’s National Team from which the 2014 USA World Cup Team will be selected.
Added to the 2014-16 USA National Team roster and participating in the July-28-Aug. 1 USA National Team training camp in Las Vegas, Nevada, are NBA standouts DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors) and Chandler Parsons (Dallas Mavericks).
Previously named USA National Team members who are confirmed to participate in the 2014 Las Vegas training camp include: Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards); DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans); Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Kenneth Faried (Denver Nuggets); Paul George (Indiana Pacers); Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers); James Harden (Houston Rockets); Gordon Hayward (Utah Jazz); Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers); Kyle Korver (Atlanta Hawks); Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); and Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors).
The 2014-16 USA Basketball National Team coaching staff features USA head coach and Duke University’s Naismith Hall of Fame mentor Mike Krzyzewski. Serving as assistant coaches are USA Basketball and Syracuse University and Naismith Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau and New Orleans Pelicans head coach Monty Williams.
Derrick Rose is uncertain if he will participate in USA Basketball's training camp starting July 28 in Las Vegas.
"I still don't know yet," Rose told Yahoo Sports at the Drew Gooden Foundation Basketball Camp on Sunday. "If I'm feeling right and the time is [right], for sure I will go out there. My body is responding good, but you never know.
"Right now, I haven't really thought about that. I am just worrying about just trying to get back every day and I'm really taking rehab one day at a time instead of trying to think about competing."
The USA are loaded at point guard with Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Russell Westbrook, Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving and Stephen Curry on the 14-16 28-man roster.
Joakim Noah won't play for France in the World Cup of Basketball this summer.
"It wouldn't be fair first of all, for my teammates, to even think about anything past today," Noah told ESPNChicago.com after Wednesday's shootaround. "When the French people ask me about [playing], it's hard to predict what's going to happen next year, or in two years. I live my life day to day, and I feel like the NBA season is, it's brutal. To play all year, I think it's something that is too much for me. So definitely not this year."
Noah sat out the 2012 Olympics due to plantar fasciitis.
Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls management and Team USA officials are all on board with Rose's potential participation in the summer's mini-camp to form the World Cup roster in Spain in September.
"Oh absolutely, if he’s healthy and he’s cleared," Tom Thibodeau said, when asked if he'd like to see Rose play. "I thought it was a great experience for him before. I know he’d like to do it. I know how USA Basketball feels about him. So if he’s cleared to do it, I’d love to see him do it."
Thibodeau is an assistant coach for Team USA. Rose was part of the 2010 World Championship team.
"I think there has been great benefits from it, particularly for Derrick," Thibodeau said. "I thought that had a lot to do with him having the great year in the MVP year."
JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche may play in the 2014 FIBA World Cup for the Philippines.
"We’re in discussion with Javale. However, he’s just found out that he needs to undergo a procedure for his shin injury. With that development, it’s prudent also to choose a backup. Blatche agreed to undergo the naturalization process. He wants to play for the Philippines," national team coach Chot Reyes said.
In Congress, Deputy Speaker Robbie Puno filed two separate bills seeking the naturalization of McGee and Blatche.
“A resolution was arrived at. The board reiterated its full support to the Gilas program. They generously cut back the season schedule by one month,” said Reyes.
“The PBA team owners have agreed to compress the season. The second and third conferences finals were reduced from best-of-seven to best-of-five. We’re also compressing the in-between conferences breaks to meet Gilas’ request,” said PBA commissioner Chito Salud.
“Even the start of the 2014-15 season will be delayed to allow the team to compete in the Asian Games,” Salud added.
McGee and Blatche were teammates with the Washington Wizards.
