NBA reduces Taylor's suspension from 10 games to six

Nov 17, 2003 11:00 PM

NEW YORK (AP) Maurice Taylor's suspension was reduced to six games Monday by the NBA, and the players' union withdrew its grievance over the penalty.

Taylor was originally suspended 10 games without pay for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The union contended that the maximum suspension should have been five games.

Talks between the league and the union produced the compromise Monday _ the same day Taylor's case was to be heard by an arbitrator.

``The grievance is being withdrawn,'' union attorney Ron Klempner said.

Taylor also was suspended by the league for the first five games of the 2002 season for smoking marijuana. He was previously suspended in December 2001 after acknowledging he used marijuana in violation of league rules.

Taylor completed his six-game suspension by missing Monday night's game against Philadelphia. He will be allowed to play Wednesday night against Golden State.

``I'm sorry that this entire situation happened,'' Taylor said in a statement released by the Rockets. ``I take responsibility for my actions and recognize that it is my responsibility to make sure that a situation like this doesn't happen again. I am happy to be back on the court with my teammates.''

For first time as head coaches, Van Gundys square off tonight

Nov 11, 2003 9:55 AM

For the first time since Larry Brown faced Herb Brown in 1977, brothers will coach opposing NBA teams tonight at Toyota Center when Jeff's Rockets play Stan's Heat.

"I'll be really proud to walk out there," Jeff Van Gundy said. "I took great pride when I was in New York and we were in those playoff series (against Miami, with whom Stan was an assistant coach). I'll be very proud. I want to win, though not for me but for the team. ... What makes it easier is thank God we're not matching up on the court."

Rockets' Taylor Suspended

Nov 8, 2003 8:30 AM

HOUSTON (AP) _ Houston Rockets forward Maurice Taylor was suspended a minimum of 10 games without pay by the NBA on Friday for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Taylor's suspension begins Saturday night when the Rockets host the Orlando Magic and will continue until he has resumed full compliance with his treatment program, the NBA said in a statement.

Taylor was not immediately available for comment Friday.

Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said he didn't know the details of why Taylor was suspended.

``I don't know what it was or consisted of,'' Dawson said. ``The league will handle this and then tell us what they want us to know. I'd like to know more about it.''

The NBA, its teams and the players' association are prohibited from disclosing information regarding the testing or treatment of any player in the program.

Taylor was suspended by the league for the first five games of the 2002 season for smoking marijuana. He was previously suspended in December 2001 after acknowledging he used marijuana in violation of league rules. Taylor was on the team's disabled list at the time and served his suspension at the start of the next season.

The players union has filed a grievance on Taylor's behalf, contending the length of the punishment is improper and excessive.

``It undermines our confidence in the fair administration of the drug program,'' union attorney Ron Klempner said.

In four games this season, Taylor has averaged 9.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in 23.5 minutes.

Earlier this season, the Rockets suspended forward Eddie Griffin after he missed several practices and a team flight.

Eddie Griffin's is unlikely to be a Houston Rocket past this year, if not sooner.

Yesterday, the team declined their fourth-year option on him.

Griffin has been suspended indefinitely since Oct. 16, costing him $25,697 a game. The fourth season of his rookie contract would have been worth $2.937 million.
