NBA teams that are serious about winning hardly ever rely heavily on rookies. Most players begin their careers on the bench in a "wait, watch and listen" mode.
That won't be the case for the youngest Golden State players when they make their NBA debuts tonight in Portland. Coming off a dreadful 17-65 season, the Warriors hope their depth propels them into playoff contention.
Much of that help off the bench must be provided by shooting guard Jason Richardson and power forward/center Troy Murphy, both first-round draft picks, along with second-round pick Gilbert Arenas, a 19-year-old, all-purpose guard. Even Dean Oliver, a rookie free agent point guard from Iowa who made the 14-player roster, could make a vital contribution, although he'll open the season on the injured list.
