Steve Nash has agreed to give $30,000 each season for the next three years to help finance the Basketball B.C. league for kids age six to 15. He even has an option for a further two years.
Basketball B.C. started in 1997, and was renamed Junior Grizzlies when then-GM Stu Jackson signed a contract agreeing to pay $200,000 in start-up costs plus about $40,000 a year for 10 years. The league grew from a few hundred in 1997 to several thousand now.
The Vancouver Sun's Gary Mason reports that things headed south when Michael Heisley bought the Grizzlies and Dick Versace took over. All cooperation from the Grizzlies ceased.
When the Grizz left town, organizers thought there would be no problem since they still had a legal contract. However, the team has reneged on the contract. Organizers feel it would cost more to sue than they would get back.
When B.C.'s Steve Nash heard about the situation, he immediately agreed to make up most of the shortfall. The league is being renamed the Steve Nash League.
