Sportscasters often call the free-throw line the charity stripe. After a 2-4 start, Heat players are among the most benevolent donors in the NBA.
Since the opening-night victory over the Toronto Raptors, the Heat has been outscored 111-50 at the line, losing four of five games.
They're being called for an average of 26 fouls a game, second most in the league behind the Raptors.
For now, Heat coach Pat Riley is channeling his blame toward whistle-happy officials and not his players.
"It's a major issue right now," Riley said after practice Sunday morning at AmericanAirlines Arena. "I don't think there's any doubt we're getting the short end of the stick. We're a post-up team, and we're going that way. These guys are getting banged and bumped. I'm not going to get into a complaining thing about it, but the disparity is absolutely unfair."
