The Mavs sported a different look at practice Monday: There were a bunch of Mavs actually practicing.
?They?re ready to go,?? said coach Don Nelson of Greg Buckner and Adrian Griffin, meaning the Mavs? wounded defensive aces who have a combined 10 minutes in the team?s first seven games are about to give Dallas close to a full complement of roster options.
Said Dirk Nowitzki: ?They?re both great players, great defenders who can make plays on the offensive end, too. We?ve looked a little flat, and we?ve had a lot of players play a lot of minutes. It feels good to have the whole team back.??
Michael Finley will also be available for the upcoming stretch, which features five road outings in the next six games. The Iron Man, still nursing that bum right shoulder, did not practice Monday, but that seems of little concern to the team.
?Michael is very important to us,?? said teammate Steve Nash, ?because he commands so much attention. Even if he?s not 100 percent, he?s still very important to us.??
Dallas still won?t have all 12 bodies ready; Wang Zhizhi, for whom the 12th spot is being held, is a week away from arriving from China. And because Buck and Griff represent two key players who have yet to be implemented into the rotation, there is probably more tinkering to be done for the ever-tinkering Nelson.
