This game was an ugly reminder of a year ago when the Hawks had their worst season in franchise history. Up 21 in the second half Tuesday night, they utterly collapsed against the struggling Indiana Pacers and dropped their 21st in a row on the road over two seasons, 106-102.
The Hawks were only as good as Jason Terry, who scored 32 of his 34 points through three quarters and had nothing left to give when the Pacers made a serious charge. Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose ripped the Hawks with jumpers and rookie point guard Jamaal Tinsley sent a message that Atlanta made a terrible mistake by not keeping him last June on draft night.
Terry missed five straight shots in the fourth before making one at the end that didn't matter. But he denied he was tired. "You've just got to make shots," he said. "Just make shots."
Shareef Abdur-Rahim didn't make them either. He had 20 points after three quarters and failed to score again.
Tinsley made enough shots on a 29-point, 11-assist night that included two free throws with 25 seconds left that virtually sealed the victory.
"He's unbelievable. You look up and you don't realize he has as many assists as he does or as many points. He plays with great passion and with great heart, that's what I admire most about him," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said.
