Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports: At a time when silver linings are in short supply, the Heat at least finds itself sitting on potential lottery gold.
For the first time in three seasons, the Heat holds its own first-round draft choice, a pick unencumbered by previous transactions.
The upcoming draft is expected to be particularly abundant in point guards, headed by likely early-entry candidate Jason Williams from Duke. Others drawing attention are Memphis' Dajuan Wagner, Boston College's Troy Bell, Illinois' Frank Williams and Florida's Brett Nelson.
"It's a very rich point guard draft," said Celtics General Manager Chris Wallace, a former Heat scout. "It could end up being four to six deep in quality point guards."
Heat General Manager Randy Pfund said there are no contingency plans to upgrade scouting should the Heat become positioned for a top-tier selection.
"Every year, you prepare as though you're going to have a pick," he said. "There have been a couple of years, the last couple of years, where we went right down to the last day where there was a possibility we could have jumped to the top of the draft."
