Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports: Swingman Sam Mack, added to provide three-point shooting off the bench, was released by the Heat on Thursday after making just 28.6 percent of his shots in 12 appearances.
Kendall Gill, who has missed 15 games after surgery on his left pinkie, is expected to take Mack's spot on the active roster before tonight's game against New Jersey.
Mack, who had been out of the NBA for more than a year before signing a one-year, nonguaranteed deal with the Heat in September, shot 14 of 49 overall and 7 of 28 on three-pointers. He averaged 3.3 points and 13.3 minutes and had not appeared in four straight games.
The Heat could have placed Mack, 31, on the injured list but opted to release him. Miami had considered signing Mario Elie to replace Mack, but Elie was deemed out of shape. Coach Pat Riley did not speak with reporters Thursday.
