As the whistle sounded to signal a second-quarter timeout, Jalen Rose let out a loud growl and clapped his hands.
It was a personal moment, a way of relieving the frustration of a prolonged shooting slump that had haunted him for the better part of a month.
"That's how you let it out," Rose said after scoring 38 points to lead the Indiana Pacers to a 97-90 victory over Chicago at Conseco Fieldhouse on Friday.
"You can't go home and punch a wall or do something stupid that you're going to regret."
Rather than punch walls, Rose knocked down jumpers. Having hit just 8-of-32 field-goal attempts over the previous three games and having shot 50 percent or better in one of the past 12, Rose pieced together the fifth-best scoring effort of his NBA career.
