Former Pistons forward George Trapp died Monday of complications following a stabbing on Jan. 11, police said.
"He was a real nice guy and he worked real hard on his game," former teammate John Long said. "It's just a shame that a lot of terrible things seem to happen to him off the court."
According to Detroit police records, Trapp, 53, argued with his roommate, Jerome Miller, 49, at their home on Ohio on Detroit's northwest side on Jan. 11. After Trapp struck Miller with an ashtray, Miller stabbed Trapp in the abdomen, police records say.
Trapp underwent surgery at Sinai Grace Hospital and was released three days later. His wound became infected, however, and he was readmitted to the hospital and again underwent surgery.
Doctors were unable to successfully close the stab wound, however, and Trapp developed pneumonia and died.
Police said Miller was arrested Monday and a murder warrant was requested from the Wayne County Prosecutor.
