Nice rants are hard to come by these days but Dave Kreiger of the Rocky Mountain News can get off a screed as sweet as that Canadian figure skater's little, uh,...smile. Kreiger, who writes like a angry fan would, takes after the Denver Nuggets owner, management, coaching staff, players and, given enough time, we suspect he would blister the kid who wipes down the sweat on the floor (oops, sorry, the Nuggets don't sweat). Kreiger's main point is that it's time for a little honesty:
"You're not going to get value for Van Exel, OK? He's overpaid, he's overwrought. You've got two choices: Refuse to give him away and let his unhappiness eat away at your locker room like hydrochloric acid or accept a $10 million roll of adhesive tape for him, take your loss and go on. No, his attitude doesn't help, but West traded him in similar circumstances."
"Stop lying about what a hard-working bunch of overachievers you have. Say something often enough, and you start to believe it. Ryan Bowen, James Posey and Avery Johnson play hard every night. Maybe Calbert Cheaney. This is not a nucleus you build around. The only players here worth building around are Antonio McDyess and Raef LaFrentz."
"Announce a Going-Out-of-Dysfunction Sale. You will take back anyone, no matter how bad, so long as his contract expires this summer or next."
Somehow we think Kreiger won't be getting invited to the team barbecue this summer. Have a read.
