Byron Scott's agent said yesterday he would embrace an opportunity to discuss a contract extension with the Nets this summer, before the coach has a chance to enter the final season of his four-year deal with the team.

Brian McInerny -- Scott's longtime agent, business manager and friend -- stopped short of saying he would demand an extension for the Nets coach this summer. But he said he would welcome the chance to talk with the Nets and said an extension would have an impact on Scott's thinking should any other team, most notably the Lakers, ever show an interest.

"I think it would be terrific if someone in the Nets organization gives him a sense of security for the long term," McInerny said. "I know Byron would appreciate it. He has children in school in New Jersey. He and Anita enjoy New Jersey. I think he'd like to know where he stands."

Nets president Rod Thorn, who would be responsible for negotiating such an extension, did not return phone calls seeking comment.
