A murmur of doubt rippled through the Laker-loving crowd, giving fans the idea that their squad might lose to an obscure group of players called the Canadian National Team. The fans wanted to give the Lakers every possible edge, and their urgency came in a chant:

"Pargo! Pargo! Pargo!'

The fans chanted for Lakers reserve Jannero Pargo during a surreal basketball moment that seems to becoming more common each year at the Summer Pro League. A near-capacity crowd of more than 4,000 basketball-starved fans filled the Pyramid for the SPL opener Sunday to see Pargo display his shooting prowess and the Lakers beat the Canadians, 91-87.

Maybe an argument could be made that a chant for Pargo isn't that strange, considering he and Kareem Rush are the only Lakers from last season on the summer team. But, no, the chanting has to be placed in the category of odd hoops occurrences because Pargo was sitting on the bench when it started.

"It was pretty cool,' Pargo said of the chanting. "Our team was having trouble bringing the ball up the court. With me, being a point guard, they wanted to see me get back in there, get the game under control and finish out the game.'
