NBA superstar Kobe Bryant voluntarily gave DNA samples to sheriff's investigators after a young woman accused him of sexually assaulting her, a source familiar with the investigation said Wednesday.

Bryant, who was not under any court order to cooperate, traveled about 48 miles to a hospital in Glenwood Springs on July 2, one day after the allegation was made to the Eagle County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies stayed with the Lakers guard at the hospital to protect the integrity of the evidence but allowed Bryant to use a hospital outside Vail to avoid publicity.

The samples have been submitted to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for further analysis.

The 19-year-old complainant and her family returned home from a planned vacation Tuesday, according to reports. She has not been identified, and no formal charges have been filed against Bryant.
