As the NBA free agent rumor mill turns, the Heat seems to have made a few firm decisions on how it will spend its $11 million, and one of those decisions is to not chase restricted free agents.
"You have to overpay in order to get somebody not to match, and then you're stuck yourself," coach Pat Riley said. "There are some intriguing players there, but I don't want to waste my time unless I have a real chance. The (players') agents are actually using that as a wedge now. They're saying, 'Don't even make an offer unless it's something the other team won't match.' There's only one guy I would do that for."
Riley didn't say who that was, but he and General Manager Randy Pfund were in Los Angeles on Monday, reportedly visiting with Golden State guard Gilbert Arenas, a restricted free agent.
Among the league's other intriguing restricted free agents are forwards Elton Brand and Lamar Odom of the Clippers, guard Andre Miller of the Clippers and guard Jason Terry of Atlanta.
But Riley, who said he and Pfund have talked with "a lot" of free agents, both restricted and unrestricted, probably won't pursue any of the aforementioned players very hard as free agents. He's too busy building.
"We need another one or two young players, then we're ready to go offer some veteran guys," he said.
