With Andre Miller and some of his teammates in mind, the Nuggets are keeping a close eye on the Los Angeles Clippers during free agency.
The Nuggets have received a commitment from Clippers point guard Miller that he will sign a six-year deal as early as Wednesday, the first day free agents can sign. Since Miller is a restricted free agent, the Clippers would have 15 days to match the offer. The Clippers also have three other free agents getting interest from the Nuggets: guard Corey Maggette, swingman Lamar Odom and center Michael Olowokandi. Forward Elton Brand, centers Sean Rooks and Cherokee Parks and guard Eric Piatkowski also are free agents.
"I'd like to have them all back," new Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy Sr. said Sunday. "It depends on the situation out there. From the standpoint of the team, we want to get them back."
The Clippers have built a reputation as the cheapest team in the NBA. Clippers executive vice president Andy Roeser, however, has issued a warning that they plan on re-signing their free agents. That being said, the Clippers haven't signed any key free agents such as Derek Anderson or Maurice Taylor to long-term deals in recent years. They reportedly have offered Brand a $65 million contract.
The Clippers must have a minimum of about $31 million in contracts next season.
Los Angeles has between $13.8 million and $15.8 million in committed salary, which means it still has to acquire several players.
"It may take the full process; let them get an offer sheet and then do research and make a decision," said Dunleavy, the franchise's 10th coach since 1990.
