The Mavericks could fill their opening for a backup point guard as early as Thursday.
Travis Best, an unrestricted free agent, said Wednesday night that the Mavericks are one of "less than a handful" of teams that he's considering. Negotiations are ongoing.
He said he has talked contract and terms with the Mavericks and other teams, and expects to choose soon.
"It's time to make some decisions," Best said.
Best made $1.4 million last season with Miami, where he averaged 8.4 points and 25 minutes a game. The 31-year-old Best tops the list of Mavericks candidates to back up All-Star Steve Nash.
"I've talked to them," Best said. "It's a great situation. Naturally, I would love to play for them. Obviously, they're a playoff team, and they're knocking on the door after reaching the Western Conference finals. It's a great place as an NBA player. As a player, you like the high-octane offense they produce. It's probably one of the funner teams to play for when you look at the caliber of talent."
