The Dominican Republic won the opening tip over the United States men's basketball team Thursday night in the Olympic qualifying Tournament of the Americas. The Dominicans even made their first two shots from the field.
After that, however, things proved a bit tougher. OK, much, much, much tougher. In the kind of game that used to be played before the U.S. struggled at last summer's world championships in Indianapolis, the Americans routed the Dominicans 111-73.
Tracy McGrady led the U.S. with 17 points, making 7-of-10 shots. Three of his field goals were from 3-point range, which was about 18 feet farther than teammate Jermaine O'Neal's shots in making 7-of-8 for 14 points.
Also, Vince Carter scored 15 points, with Kenyon Martin and Ray Allen contributing 13 and 12 apiece as the U.S. shot 64 percent from the field. Amaury Filion led the Dominican Republic with a game-high 18 points.
