Michael Jordan won't be assembling the Charlotte Bobcats' roster.

Jordan has turned down an offer from Bobcats' owner Bob Johnson to be team president and part-owner, a source close to the situation told The Observer Friday morning. Jordan and Johnson were scheduled to meet over the weekend to settle whether Jordan would join the organization.

Johnson started recruiting Jordan months ago, immediately after Jordan was told he would not be reinstalled as the Washington Wizards' head of basketball operations. In the interim, Jordan failed in an attempt to buy the Milwaukee Bucks, when Bucks owner Herb Kohl abruptly took that team off the market.

With Jordan out of the picture, Bobcats executive vice president Ed Tapscott is expected to lead the search for a general manager. Tapscott has an extensive basketball background with the New York Knicks and will be involved with major basketball decisions here. But his stated preference is for someone else to oversee the basketball operation day-to-day.

One viable possibility for that job is Bernie Bickerstaff, current general manager of the WNBA Charlotte Sting. Bickerstaff has been both a GM and head coach in the NBA.
