VAST IMPROVEMENT
The Denver Nuggets matched last season's victory total (17) on Monday night, beating Memphis 106-99. The Nuggets are 17-11 (.607) and are on pace for their best season since 1987-88, when they went 54-28 and won the Midwest Division.
NO PAYBACK
Magic coach Johnny Davis, who coached the 76ers during the 1996-97 season, lost to his former team Monday night, 95-73. Davis went 22-60 with Philadelphia that season before he was fired and replaced by Larry Brown. The Magic are 6-12 under Davis, who replaced Doc Rivers. Rivers was fired in November after the team started 1-10.
ROAD WARRIORS
The Utah Jazz beat the Chicago Bulls 92-80 on Monday night, to end their road trip that included six games in nine nights with a 3-3 record. The Jazz turned the ball over 26 times, but managed to win.
NEW YORK CHANGES
Scott Layden was fired Monday as president of the New York Knicks and was replaced by Isiah Thomas. The move came after New York missed the playoffs the past two seasons with a roster largely assembled by Layden. The Knicks are 10-18 this season. Layden joined the Knicks in the summer of 1999 after they were coming off an appearance in the NBA Finals.
