Season-low point totals and paltry attendance figures. Double-doubles and short-handed teams.
Numbers, both small and large, told the story in the NBA on Monday night, when two teams set season lows for points, Tim Duncan recorded his 28th double-double of the season and the Phoenix Suns almost won a game for which they had only eight players in uniform.
The most impressive number of all might have been the 23-point deficit the Seattle SuperSonics overcame _ thanks to a season-high 42 points from star guard Ray Allen.
Allen helped the Sonics come back by scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter and another seven in overtime. The visiting Blazers led 87-69 after the third quarter, but completely collapsed and had no answer for Allen, eventually losing 119-108.
``Allen definitely was a big key to their win,'' Portland's Dale Davis said. ``Time after time he made big shots. When a guy gets in a zone like that, with his ability, you can't stop him.''
In other NBA games, it was Detroit 78, Boston 68; Milwaukee 88, Philadelphia 76; Indiana 87, Miami 65; Chicago 87, Phoenix 82; Houston 83, Golden State 65; Utah 108, Dallas 94; and San Antonio 98, Denver 74.
The Suns put up a valiant fight on the road with just eight players before falling to Chicago. The game was played just hours after Phoenix completed a blockbuster trade that sent Stephon Marbury, Penny Hardaway and Cezary Trybanski to New York for Antonio McDyess, Howard Eisley, Charlie Ward and Maciej Lampe, and the rights to Milos Vujanic and two first-round picks.
``It's a difficult situation, but we have to keep going,'' Phoenix's Leandro Barbosa said. ``Stephon is a very good friend of mine. I cried today. I love him, but we have to keep it going.''
SuperSonics 119, Trail Blazers 108, OT
At Seattle, Allen, in only his seventh game back after 25 games on the injured list after having bone spurs removed from his right ankle, was 16-for-27 from the field, dished out eight assists, and pulled down six rebounds.
Allen gave the Sonics a 104-102 lead when he hit a 3-pointer with 19.7 seconds left. Damon Stoudamire sent the game to overtime with a 22-footer with 1.1 seconds left.
Zach Randolph led Portland with 28 points.
Rockets 83, Warriors 65
At Houston, Maurice Taylor scored a season-high 25 points as Houston handed Golden State its sixth straight loss.
The Warriors lost for the eighth time in 10 games, despite holding Rockets leading scorer Steve Francis without a point until he made a layup with 1:35 to play. Francis finished with a season-low two points and a season-high 12 assists.
A season-low 9,956 fans attended the game at Houston's new Toyota Center.
Bulls 87, Suns 82
At Chicago, Kirk Hinrich scored 19 points, Jerome Williams added 13 points and 15 rebounds and Rick Brunson hit two clutch free throws in the final seconds as Chicago defeated short-handed Phoenix.
Barbosa, who had a career-high 27 points, cut the Bulls' lead to 83-82 on a driving layup with 19 seconds left.
Brunson then hit two free throws to make it 85-82. Phoenix's Shawn Marion missed a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left that could have tied it.
Spurs 98, Nuggets 74
At Denver, Tim Duncan had 30 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists for his 28th double-double of the season, leading San Antonio to its 14th win in 15 games.
Duncan has 373 double-doubles in his career, the most by any player since the 1998-99 season. Marcus Camby led the Nuggets with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Jazz 108, Mavericks 94
At Salt Lake City, Raja Bell matched his career high with 25 points and Andrei Kirilenko added 21 points and 12 rebounds to help Utah beat Dallas.
Utah played without head coach Jerry Sloan and leading scorer Matt Harpring. Sloan missed the game to be with wife Bobbye, who has been ill, and Harpring sat out his third straight game while resting his strained right knee.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 24 points for Dallas, which has dropped six of seven on the road.
Bucks 88, 76ers 76
At Philadelphia, Desmond Mason scored a season-high 24 points to spoil Allen Iverson's return to the 76ers' lineup.
Toni Kukoc added 14 points for the Bucks, who have won three straight and are a season-high two games over .500. The Bucks have won seven of 10, including two straight on the road.
Iverson, who scored 18, was back after missing the last 10 games with a bruised right knee. The Sixers went 3-7 without Iverson, including 1-4 on their Western road trip.
Pistons 78, Celtics 68
At Boston, Tayshaun Prince scored seven of his 13 points during a key 11-0 run in the fourth quarter and Detroit held the Celtics to a season-low point total.
The win was the sixth straight for the Pistons, who have held their opponents under 100 points in all 35 of their games this season. They have done it 37 consecutive times dating to last season.
Ben Wallace scored 12 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Detroit. Paul Pierce paced Boston with 27 points.
Pacers 87, Heat 65
At Miami, Jermaine O'Neal had his eighth consecutive double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Indiana earned its fifth win in a row by beating Miami.
