SCOTT FIRED

Byron Scott was fired as coach of the New Jersey Nets on Monday by team president Rod Thorn, who was unhappy with the team's performance during the first half of the season. The two-time defending Eastern Conference champions are 22-20 after losing five of six games. Scott was replaced by Lawrence Frank, a 33-year-old assistant whose promotion to the head-coaching job comes with an ``interim'' label for the rest of this season _ though Thorn made it clear that Frank will keep the job if the Nets perform well.

LeBron James scored 16 points in his first game back from a sprained ankle to help Cleveland to a 99-98 victory over Orlando on Monday night.

Tim Duncan's dunk as time expired was waved off after officials reviewed the play, giving Milwaukee a 93-92 victory over San Antonio on Monday night. Replays showed Duncan still had the ball in his hand when the light atop the backboard came on, giving the Bucks their 13th home win in 14 games.
