FRANKLY AMAZING

Nets coach Lawrence Frank tied an NBA record for the best start as a coach at 9-0 with New Jersey's 105-85 win over Cleveland on Wednesday night. Frank, who took over for the fired Byron Scott on Jan. 26 matched the record set by Kurt Rambis (Los Angeles Lakers, 1998-1999) and Buddy Jeannette (Baltimore Bullets 1947-1948).

KOBE'S RETURN

Kobe Bryant scored 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting in his first game back from the injured list in the Lakers' 102-87 loss to Houston on Wednesday night. Bryant missed seven games with a cut on his right index finger.

IMMORTALIZED

A 17-foot bronze statue of Magic Johnson was unveiled on Wednesday at the Staples Center. Appropriately, the sculpted figure shows Johnson dribbling with his right hand and pointing with his left index finger as if leading a fast break. Johnson won five NBA championships with the Lakers in the 1980's. The team played at the Forum in nearby Inglewood during that time, moving to Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles in 1999.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

Stephon Marbury had 29 points and 10 assists in New York's 106-98 loss to New Orleans on Wednesday night. ... The Clippers' Elton Brand had 24 points and 15 rebounds in a 110-102 loss to Memphis. ... The Suns' Amare Stoudamire scored 33 points in a 110-99 loss to Golden State.

BUTLER RECUPERATING

Miami forward Caron Butler remained hospitalized Wednesday with back spasms and a bruised buttocks after falling to the court against the Los Angeles Lakers. Butler was fouled hard under the basket Tuesday night by the Lakers' Kareem Rush early in the third quarter.

THE KID DELIVERS

Kevin Garnett scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for his 14th straight double-double to lead Minnesota past the Utah Jazz 77-66 Wednesday night. Garnett leads the NBA with 46 double-doubles this season.
