The Florida guard's AAU basketball coach says it's not time for Anthony Roberson to turn pro.
A mentor to Florida sophomore Anthony Roberson is expecting that the point guard will return for his junior season.
"As of right now, there is no discussion about the NBA Draft," said Curtis Giles, Roberson's former AAU basketball coach in Michigan. "He's a student enrolled at Florida and right now he's doing the things he needs to do to get ready for his junior year."
Roberson has until May 10 to decide whether to apply for the NBA Draft or return to school. After Florida's NCAA Tournament loss against Manhattan, Roberson said he was undecided on whether he would come back for his junior year.
Roberson finished his sophomore year as Florida's leader in scoring (17.9 points per game) and assists (108). In 28 starts, he led Florida in scoring 17 times, and was named the All-Southeastern Conference first-team point guard.
Last week, Florida coach Billy Donovan said he felt Roberson was "leaning toward coming back." The two have talked a few times since the season ended, Donovan said.
Giles described his close ties with Roberson as a "father-son" type relationship. The two talk at least once a week. Roberson joined Giles' 17-under team as an eighth-grader, running a team of standout players from throughout the state.
"Peeps ultimately would like to be a pro," Giles said. "That's his aspiration. But the circumstances have to be right.
"Right now, he's concentrating on his books, working with the weights to get a little bit stronger, and then the courses he's going to need to take for the summer."
