Rudy Tomjanovich, who resigned from his job coaching the L.A. Lakers on Feb. 2 for health reasons, has been a named thrown around for the Portland job, but he says he will not coach again.
?Absolutely not,? says Tomjanovich, 56, who also resigned as coach of the Houston Rockets in 2003 because he was contending with bladder cancer. ?I?m scouting for the Lakers now, and I?ll be working for them for at least two more years ? hopefully longer.?
Tomjanovich says he has not had a recurrence of cancer but says exhaustion on the Laker job forced him out of coaching permanently.
?I?m still doing maintenance treatments to prevent the cancer from coming back,? he says. ?I quit because I was just worn out. The job can do that to you. I was having problems with sinus infections and my resistance being low. Antibiotic after antibiotic couldn?t get rid of the infections.
?I felt my body getting worse and worse, and it was time to leave. I?m going to miss it, but I want to lead a happy life.?
