Jerry Stackhouse will start the season on the inactive list because of inflammation in his right knee.

In addition, the Mavericks' sixth man plans to visit the doctor who performed surgery on the knee in 2003 to see if there is anything more serious than lingering soreness.

Stackhouse, who averaged 14.9 points last season, sat out the final seven games of preseason after developing soreness. He has not gone through any practices.

"It's not time to hit any panic buttons yet," coach Avery Johnson said. "Hopefully, we'll have him back on the court sooner rather than later."
