Some time soon, perhaps within the next month, Fred Hoiberg will have to make a decision. Does he put the pedal down, try to prepare for a return to the NBA this season? Or does he wait to make a go at it next year?

The good news: It will likely be his decision to make.

That was the result of a series of tests administered to him Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic. Hoiberg, who had surgery in June to repair an aneurysm in his aortic root, was cleared by his doctors for any activity.

"Everything went great," Hoiberg said. "My doctors pretty much cleared me to do everything."

Hoiberg had three tests. One was designed to see how his heart responded to vigorous activity. He ran on a treadmill until he couldn't go any more, then had an immediate heart ultrasound. Another was designed to gauge his overall condition. The third was another test of his heart with his pacemaker turned down. Again, his heart beat on its own.
