Juan Carlos Navarro and Jose Calderon combined for 39 points to lead Spain and Pau Gasol to a 92-71 victory over Germany and Dirk Nowitzki on Monday in the opening round of the FIBA world championships in Hiroshima, Japan.
Spain (3-0) ensured itself of advancing to the single-elimination round of 16, and Germany (2-1) should still advance despite the loss as the top four in each group advances.
The 7-footers -- Gasol, who plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, and Nowitzki, who led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals -- had solid games, but it was the Spanish defense and backcourt that made the difference.
