The New Jersey Nets are moving closer to trading star point guard Jason Kidd before Thursday's NBA trade deadline.

The Los Angeles Lakers are the leading suitor but their offer may not be sufficient to finish the deal.

According to three officials in the Eastern Conference who spoke to the New York Times on condition of anonymity, the Nets have been trying to involve at least one other team in the trade.  And the Nets may be hoping that other teams that would like to acquire Kidd will beat the Lakers' package.

The prevailing speculation is that big men Chris Mihm and Kwame Brown, point guard Jordan Farmar and a draft pick are the core pieces of the Lakers' offer.
