Agent Aaron Goodwin wrote a commentary in Friday's Oakland Tribune about the differences between how the NBA and NFL deal with rookie contracts.
"The NFL wouldn't necessarily benefit from implementing an NBA-type wage scale for rookies," wrote Goodwin. "The systems are different.
"The dynamics of the relationship between the NFL Players Association and the NFL are different than those of the NBA Players Association and the NBA. The most important distinction is that NBA contracts are fully guaranteed. For the most part, that is not the case in the NFL.
"While the NFL might like to eliminate holdouts, that might not be in the best interest of players.
"I actually like the NFL's system for dealing with rookie contracts. The rookie pool is tied to the growth in leaguewide revenues. That means as the league generates more revenue, rookies share in that growth. That does not happen in the NBA. The NBA rookie pool is predetermined and thus is not affected by the growth or decline in revenues."
