Mario Chalmers made a 3-pointer and a free throw in the final 20 seconds, and No. 4 Kansas held off Southern California (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, No. 22 AP) 59-55 Sunday.

After USC had pulled within 55-53 on Davon Jefferson's two free throws with 54 seconds left, Chalmers hit his 3 from the left side, then added a free throw with 3 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.

He finished with 20 points to help the Jayhawks make their first road game this season a win.

Chalmers had seven rebounds; Darrell Arthur had 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game; and Darnell Jackson had nine points and 13 rebounds to help the Jayhawks (7-0) control the inside for much of the game.

Freshman O.J. Mayo led the Trojans (6-2) with 19 points but shot just 6-of-21 from the floor. Davon Jefferson, also a freshman, added 17 points.
