Yao Ming is expected to become a free agent in the famed summer of 2010, but both the center and the Rockets are looking to keep their relationship going.
"Obviously, we are focused on keeping Yao in Houston long term," general manager Daryl Morey said. "He is an elite center and we expect him to play an integral part in this team's future success. We plan to continue building our roster around him."
Yao will be 30 after the 2009-10 season.
"I've played for this team for seven years," Yao said. "It's hard to just drop it and switch to another one and start over. I want a full career and I feel like the Rockets are like home. Why change?"
