The latest negotiating session between the NBA's current refs and league executives broke down on Tuesday.

The news could mean that replacement referees will call games for the first time since 1995.

The league's most recent contract with its referees expired on Sept. 1 and Tuesday's session in New York was reportedly called to a halt by commissioner David Stern.

No further talks are scheduled at this point. The league's first exhibition game will be held on Oct. 1.

The NBA is believed to be proposing a reduction of their referee budget.
