ESPN, Fox, NBC, CBS and Turner Sports have experimented with the idea of using virtual reality to superimpose realistic-looking fans onto screens to enhance the viewing experience.

The idea is in its infancy and there's a mixture of opinions toward it.

Games will likely resume without fans at least initially.

“They’re looking at ways to put virtual fans in the stands so when you see a wide shot it looks the stadium is jam-packed and in fact it’ll be empty,” said Joe Buck on Tuesday.

For the NBA, they could offer an intimate view of the game without the need to enhance the broadcast as much by essentially playing the game on a sound stage.
