Domantas Sabonis is expected to remain with the Sacramento Kings past Thursday's trade deadline, with talks involving the Toronto Raptors reaching an impasse. Team sources indicated the Kings view the prospect of trading Sabonis to Toronto as dead.

The Raptors showed strong interest in recent weeks, with Sacramento seeking to acquire RJ Barrett in the deal while moving Sabonis' substantial contract. Barrett earns $27.7 million this season and $29.6 million next season, while Sabonis makes $42.3 million this year, $45.4 million next season and $48.6 million in 2027-28.

Any deal would have required Jakob Poeltl to be rerouted elsewhere. The Memphis Grizzlies showed some interest after trading Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz, but Toronto is reluctant to attach the necessary draft capital to facilitate that component.

The scenario could be revisited by both sides in the offseason. The Washington Wizards displayed genuine interest in recent days, but the draft pick compensation heading to Sacramento was deemed insufficient. The Wizards subsequently acquired their center in Anthony Davis through a trade with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Charlotte Hornets also showed interest in Sabonis earlier this offseason but not at the deadline. Barring an unexpected development, Sabonis is on track to remain in Sacramento.

The 29-year-old center recently returned from a torn meniscus. In 18 games this season, Sabonis is averaging 15.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting just 18.5 percent from three-point range.

Sacramento has been exploring options to reshape its roster after missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons. The Kings hold a 26-24 record and sit ninth in the Western Conference.

Sabonis signed a five-year, $195 million contract extension in July 2023, tying him to the franchise through the 2027-28 season. The three-time All-Star has been a fixture in Sacramento's lineup since arriving in a February 2022 trade from the Indiana Pacers.

Sabonis is represented by Jason Ranne and Greg Lawrence.
