LeBron James and Marcus Smart combined for one of the most dramatic late-game sequences of the 2026 playoffs Friday, erasing a six-point deficit in the final 28 seconds of regulation to force overtime and ultimately defeat the Houston Rockets 112-108, putting Los Angeles one win from advancing to the second round.
Smart ignited the comeback by stealing a Jabari Smith Jr. pass with 27.8 seconds remaining, drawing a shooting foul and converting all three free throws to cut Houston's lead to three. The Rockets had a 97 percent win probability before the Smart steal.
"It was a smart play," Smart said. "My vet savvy. Been in the league for 12 years. I picked up some tricks."
James then trapped Rockets guard Reed Sheppard in the backcourt, poked the ball free to Rui Hachimura and caught a return pass to drain a three-pointer from the arc with 13.6 seconds left, tying the game.
The Lakers outscored Houston 11-7 in overtime. Smart finished with 21 points, 10 assists and five steals. Hachimura contributed 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and secured a critical offensive rebound that led to his own layup during an extended overtime possession. James played 45 minutes, finishing with 29 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.
The Lakers became just the second team in the past 30 postseasons to trail by six or more points in the final 30 seconds of regulation and win, per ESPN Research.
Los Angeles has accomplished this without Luka Doncic (left hamstring) and Austin Reaves (left oblique) for three weeks, a combined loss of nearly 60 points per game.
"We don't have the luxury of being passive or complacent," James said.
Kevin Durant could return from a sprained left ankle for Houston in Sunday's Game 4.
Game 4 is on Sunday in Houston with the Rockets favored by 4.5 points despite their 0-3 series deficit. The Rockets entered the series with an 86 percent probability of advancing.
