The NBA will test the one free throw rule during July's summer leagues in Northern California, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
The one free throw rule has been used by the G League since 2019-20 to improve the game flow.
The one free throw rule awards one free throw for any foul that would result in one, two, or three free throws. The free throw attempt is worth the same number of points as the free throws it replaces.
Game switch back to the standard free throw rule when under two minutes and for overtime.
The NBA will also test an embedded ball with a sensor that detects contact with the ball for the summer leagues.
