It?s time for all you wannabe general managers, you basketball know-it-alls, you guys who can name the complete rosters of every NBA team to put your egos and talent evaluation skills to the test.  RealGM is holding it?s first ever Pick The Players contest.  The winner gets an official RealGM t-shirt ? 100 percent cotton and downright spiffy looking ? and more importantly, bragging rights on the message boards.

Here?s how it works.

Using the Player Production Average (points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks ? missed field goal attempts ? missed free throw attempts ? turnovers ? personal fouls ? divided by games played), I?ve ranked all 420 players who have appeared in an NBA game this season.  Your job ? pick the best team.  But, we?re not looking for an All-Star team ? any schmuck could make a fabulous roster with Kobe, McGrady, Shaq, Garnett, Duncan, Kidd, etc.  We?re looking for some thought, some knowledge, some analysis.

The rankings below are objective ? based purely on stats.  Assembling a team is a subjective matter requiring talent analysis and a sense for how the pieces fit together.

Your job, should you accept it, is to pick 12 players to form a complete NBA roster.  You can pick one guy from each 25-player group.  In other words, you get one player from 1-25, one from 26-50, one from 51-75, and so on.  If you don?t like a player in one grouping, you can choose two from a lower grouping.  You may not pick a player from the preceding group.

Email your roster plus a brief explanation (no more than 100 words) to kevinbroom@realgm.com by midnight Eastern time Friday, March 21 and you?re entered.

The winner will be chosen by an esteemed panel of RealGM affiliates, writers and NBA experts, including myself.  We?ll be voting based on the players chosen, as well as the explanation.  We want to know why you chose specific players, and how you envision the pieces fitting together.

The top five entries ? as chosen by the judges ? will be reported in this space as soon as we can review the entries.

Listed below are the players, their rankings and their positions.  It?s okay to make a reasonable position change ? using Garnett at PF, for example ? but you can?t do something nutty like use Shaq at point guard.
