With this week's announcement that the league will revert to the traditional leather game ball effective January 1st, here is a collection of other big NBA miscues in recent history.

Raptors Scoring Miscue

Some Toronto fans on RealGM?s forums complained that during a game earlier this season the Raptors? T.J. Ford wasn?t credited with a made lay-up late in the game. After reviewing the game clip on YouTube, many at RealGM agreed.

The mishap led Toronto to hire a ?special assistant? whose sole purpose is to keep track of each game?s score.

Extending the First Round to Seven Games

A few years ago, the Lakers got off to a horrible start where it appeared that they would be a very low seed.  The league coincidentally extended the first round of the playoffs to a seven-game series shortly thereafter.

While the move was a good one for the bank accounts of the league and their teams, it has had the reverse effect on its players and even fans. The NBA?s postseason now lasts for three full months, which comes after the league?s five and a half month season. That only gives players a little over three months to recover, not including international play and training camps.

Even as a diehard basketball enthusiast, the season can drag on a little long. Of course, my Pacers don?t usually last until mid-June so their season tends to run a little shorter.

Moving the Three-Point Line In

Almost a decade ago, the league moved the three-point line in to help increase league scoring. Sharpshooters like Reggie Miller and Dale Ellis complained about the move, but officials made the change to make the league more exciting.

They have since moved it back to the original distance.

League-wide Dress Code

One of the most unnecessary of the NBA?s post-brawl rules has been instituting a league-wide dress code in place. While I understand that it?s all about cleaning up the league?s poor image, the rule has gone overboard with fashion restrictions. Gone are Iverson and Kobe showing up to games in vintage throwbacks and in are the three-piece Armani suits.

In addition to the dress modifications, the NBA has also set strict rules in place for what a player can sport on the court.

Indiana?s Jermaine O?Neal was recently fined for wearing a wrist band too high up on his arm. Players are also being fined for wearing sweatbands that are ?too long? by the league?s standards this season. Rules such as these should not be put in place by the league itself.  Leave it up to each organization to make individual rules.

Keeping Mark Cuban Quiet

While the implementation of the synthetic game ball and the Toronto scoring miscue were not a miscue of bad intention, the silencing of Mark Cuban appears to be. Cuban was the NBA?s most candid personality and he certainly aroused interest in the league more than any other owner.  He also invests more into the game both financially and due to his personal ambassadorship of the league than any other owner.

He may often times be critical of David Stern and his policies, but I think he was the perfect benevolent ?enemy? for the league commissioner. He keeps Stern on his toes, and makes sure that the owner/player side of things is considered in decisions made by league officials.

I didn?t think anything could silence Cuban, but recent criticism has led him to take a sarcastic vow of silence towards the league.
