This year's Slam Dunk Contest was especially bad, perhaps the worst of all-time.

The Sunday morning after the contest is usually filled with chatter about the amazing dunks from the contest. Jeremy Evans' victory is a driving force behind many reasons why the Slam Dunk Contest needs to be changed or eliminated.

Once the premiere event of All-Star Saturday, the contest has become a problem for the league. The creativity, athleticism and excitement that has helped popular players such as Dwight Howard and Blake Griffin becomes superstars has been replaced by a contest filled with gimmicks, unknown participants and bad dunks.

I can't imagine what types of things we'll see next year if the contest is still around. One thing that's clear is the league need to find a way to help the contest regain its popularity.

"I think you have to get the face of the league guys in the contest," Paul George said. "When you look back at when the contest was exciting people you had the faces of the league going at it. Players like Michael (Jordan) and Dominique (Wilkins) going at it. It's what the fans want to see. If you can get guys like LeBron James, Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook in the contest, I think you'd see the contest elevated again."

Getting top-tier guys would be great, but the reality is guys like James, Howard and Griffin are so busy during the weekend that entering the contest isn't something that is appealing to them. There are, however, guys in the league that have great dunks and want to be in the contest. The league needs to do a better job at finding them.

"I think more people should be invited," Derrick Williams said. "I know a lot of people around the league that would like to do it, but they weren't invited."

The league also needs to do a better job at giving players an incentive that makes the contest worthwhile. Griffin and Howard became stars behind clever marketing campaigns as a result of their performances in the contest. But the prize money given by the league wasn't any different. Considering the money these players are making for various appearances, it doesn't make sense for them to compete if the incentive isn't attractive.

Bottom line is something needs to change because the contest won't last much longer if it remains the same. Saturday night wasn't exciting, compelling or intriguing; it was boring. The fans weren't into it and the players didn't look too excited either.
