NBPA To Enforce Rules Against Agents Representing Players, GMs/Coaches

Feb 23, 2016 12:49 PM

National Basketball Players Association player representatives voted at All-Star Weekend in Toronto to increase player-agent dues and the increase will begin with the 2016-17 season.

The current rate for agents is $1,500 per season, but even for agents who represent as few as nine players, that yearly fee will increase to $2,500.

For agents with 10-19 players, the fee will be $5,000, and for agents with more than 20 players, annual dues will be $7,500.

The NBPA also said “the regulation prohibiting an Agent from representing both an NBA player and a coach/GM will now be strictly enforced. There will be a six-month grace period (August 22, 2016) to allow agents to transition clients to another agent.”

The NBPA informed agents in the memo that “Monetary fines, up to a maximum of $100,000, will now be part of the list of potential penalties for agents. The range of penalties will now be: public reprimand, fine, suspension, decertification. Please note that the NHLPA, NFLPA, and MLBPA all have the right to levy fines against Agents without limitation."

Teams Using $92M Projected Cap For 16-17

Feb 16, 2016 10:29 AM

Many teams are using $92 million as the new projected cap for the 16-17 season.

The NBA initially projected an $89 million ceiling for next ceiling as the league's new television deals begin.

The NBPA rejected a smoothing proposal from the owners that would have resulted in a gradual salary cap increase.

Raptors Haven't Asked For Relief For Canadian Dollar

Feb 13, 2016 8:29 PM

Adam Silver was asked if there were any plans to make a deal with the Toronto Raptors due to the drop in the Canadian dollar.

In the past, Major League Baseball made a deal to give the Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos some relief.

"There is no current plans to make any adjustments, but we have a planning committee of our owners that deals with matters like that," said Silver. "Of course it's something that we talk to MLSE about all the time. I should say the issue is complex, because in many cases when it comes to league revenue that's paid to the Raptors, it's paid in U.S. dollars, and they have other expenses, of course, they pay in Canadian dollars. So it's something that we're studying.

"The Raptors have not asked for relief from the league, but there have been periods of time historically when the Canadian dollar was at a low point when there have been adjustments made. So we'll continue to look at it. That's the purpose of our planning committee, which also oversees revenue sharing among our teams."

NBA To Discuss Adding Corporate Logos On Jerseys For 17-18 Season

Feb 11, 2016 7:26 PM

The NBA sent out a memo seeking feedback about placing corporate logos on uniforms for the 17-18 season.

The initiative must be approved by the Board of Governors in April, which would allow teams a year to sell the space and it would also coincide with the start of their deal with Nike.

The NBA is proposing 50 percent of the money from a deal would be kept by the team with the other 50 percent going into a revenue-sharing pot due to the discrepancy between big and small markets.

Deals would be restricted to three years.

In 2011, Adam Silver suggested selling ads on jerseys could be worth $100 million per year.

Players will wear a Kia logo on the upper left chest of All-Star jerseys.

NBA Expects Players To Opt Out Of CBA If No Deal Reached By Dec. 15th

Feb 9, 2016 5:57 PM

Adam Silver and Michele Roberts have been meeting regularly as they work on building their relationship and trust.

Both the owners and players have the ability to opt out of the current CBA by Dec. 15th.

Silver said "clearly we’re operating under the premise that if we can’t get a new deal negotiated by then, they are likely to opt out. That puts a lot of pressure on both sides to work over the next 10 months, which is a long time, to get an extension done."

Silver has expressed optimism of a deal being reached.

“My cause for optimism is based on to me the spirit of the discussions and the directness in which we’ve been dealing with each other,” Silver said.
