The Sonics showed energy and promise when they twice defeated the Sacramento Kings during the exhibition season.
But last night, in the season opener, it was a different story. Even without Chris Webber and his injured right ankle, the Kings transformed into the familiar high-scoring team to defeat the Sonics 101-95 at Arco Arena.

"They definitely came with more intensity," Sonics Coach Nate McMillan said. "They played with more of a focus tonight."

The Sonics didn't have a letdown. But the moments of precision and execution on offense were countered by enough sloppy play to keep them behind for most of the game. And a second-half injury to forward Rashard Lewis, though he didn't consider it serious, hindered the Sonics as well.

Under a balanced offense led by Vin Baker's 20 points, the Sonics scored enough to win most of the time.
