Alonzo Mourning said Saturday the stomach ailment that sidelined him for two games was more than a bout of food poisoning. He also admitted that such absences remain a concern as he continues his battle with kidney illness.

Speaking before the Heat faced the Sacramento Kings at AmericanAirlines Arena, the veteran center said he was hospitalized for more than five hours taking intravenous fluids Tuesday, had a 102-degree fever, and lost about 7 pounds. In addition, Mourning said he had to go a day without his kidney medication because he could not hold food down.

Amid his ongoing struggle with focal glomerulosclerosis, Mourning said common illnesses could require extra vigilance.

"Because of the medications I'm taking," he said, "it affects my immune system. It weakens it in a way where it makes me more susceptible to the little things that I would normally kind of fight off. It's just a matter of taking care of my body a little bit better."

Mourning, who has regained almost all of the lost weight but struggled Saturday with his play and his stamina, was told the illness was not from something he ate.

"It was a virus that kind of put me out of commission for a couple of days," he said, going three days without any conditioning until Friday. "I just couldn't keep anything down. And with my kidney condition, that's not safe at all. The last thing you want to do is let your body get dehydrated.
