Neither Scott Layden nor James Dolan revealed who the next Knick coach would be. But all signs seem to point to former Rockets and Pistons coach Don Chaney, at least on an interm basis.

"We're confident we're going to continue to put a great basketball product on the floor and our fans will be able to love and enjoy the Knicks," Dolan said.

George Willis of the New York Post sees Chaney as the only candidate to replace Van Gundy. Willis writes that the urgency of the situation, as well as Chaney's credentials, make him the only choice. He has been an NBA head coach before - in fact, he was the Coach of the Year in 1990-91.

An assistant with the Knicks for the last seven seasons, he's also familiar with not only the Knick personnel, but with the other demands of coaching here, including the media and the public's insistence on winning.

Dolan admitted, "We recognize the team needs stability."
